in|讀讀英譯版《孫子兵法》原文|in|and|use|注解|of|to|boot|孫

上個月初讀了英譯本《道德經》，月末在飛機上讀完了手頭上的英譯版《孫子兵法》。

《孫子兵法》的核心內容非常短，整理下也就一篇公眾號文章的長度。但閱讀不等于「認識里面的每一個字」，我們更要關注是什么、為什么。我手頭的這本英譯本安排的不錯：Translator's Introduction 部分介紹了《孫子兵法》的核心理念；正文部分除了翻譯原文，還翻譯了曹操、杜牧、李筌等人的注解。
和所有的經典英譯本一樣，英文譯本比古文原文好讀。比如：
原文：故經之以五事，校之以計而索其情：一曰道，二曰天，三曰地，四曰將，五曰法。
譯文：Therefore measure in terms of five things, use these assessments to make comparisons, and thus find out what the conditions are. The five things are the way, the weather, the terrain, the leadership, and discipline.
那這里的「道」是什么呢？原文有詳細解釋：「道者，令民與上同意也，故可以與之死，可以與之生，而不畏危。」譯者還翻譯了幾位名家注解，比如：
CAO CAO: This means guiding them by instruction and direction. Danger means distrust.
DU MU: The Way means humanness and justice. In ancient times a famous minister of state asked a political philosopher about military matters. The philosopher said, "humaneness and justice are the means by which to govern properly, people feel close to the leadership and think little of dying for it."
這樣的注解對我很有啟發，也提醒我閱讀時要注意「定義關鍵字」。讀懂了原文后，要敢于給出自己的理解，也主動學習他人的解讀。讀完這本書我還讀了《孫子兵法全鑒》和《華杉講透〈孫子兵法〉》，后者的解讀方式接地氣、耐讀，對我也很有啟發。比如上一段對「道」的解讀，他說：

我感觸最深的是不起眼的一句：Disorder arises from order, cowardice arises from courage, weakness arises from strength.（亂生于治，怯生于勇，弱生于強。）它讓我想到真正的勇敢和強大是敢于承認怯弱。我們要學會和脆弱敏感相處，練習示弱，讓生活適當失控。
譯者說《孫子兵法》和《道德經》一脈相承。雖是「兵法」，但它的內核是「不戰」。相比《三十六計》中的計謀，《孫子兵法》講的是沖突的本質和領導力，我們可以從心理學、政治、哲學的角度理解和應用它。
As a classic of Taoist thought, The Art of War is thus a book not only of war but also of peace, above all a tool for understanding the very roots of conflict and resolution.

最后分享幾處值得注意和學習的英文。
- Use anger to throwthem into disarray. 怒而撓之
我們可能不太習慣 throw 的這種用法。 throw 在口語中非常靈活，比如 throw a tantrum ， throw a slur on ， throw oneself into ，我們要注意這樣貌似簡單的用法。
- Change their colors, use them mixed in with your own. Treat the soldiers well, take care of them. This is called overcoming the opponent and increasing your strength to boot. 車雜而乘之，卒善而養之，是謂勝敵而益強。
to boot 是個常見說法，自己查一下吧。
