這首歌創作于60年代，60年代對美國而言是個多事之秋，歷經了一連串的動蕩與不安。對內，反種族歧視民權意識高漲;對外背負著“越戰”沉重的包袱。內憂外患之際，美國人的精神領袖約翰·肯尼迪(John F.Kennedy)總統于1963年11月22日在德州的達拉斯遇刺身亡，舉世震驚，全國悲慟。
由黑人人權領袖馬丁·路德·金博士(Martin Luther King Jr.)所領導的反暴力反種族歧視正如火如荼的展開，國內反越戰的聲音也日益壯大。美國人民的夢在肯尼迪總統倒下的一刻，也跟著粉碎了。
就在這樣的時空背景下，美國的民謠歌手保羅·西蒙(Paul Simon)創作了這首家喻戶曉、發人深省的歌曲：寂靜之聲(The Sound Of Silence)，獻給了動蕩的60年代。
