峨眉山的主要山峰有：
1、大峨山
大峨山是峨眉山的主峰，海拔3099米，山脈峰巒起伏，重巖疊翠，山麓至峰頂50余公里，石徑盤旋，直上云霄。在金頂有大面積抗風化強的玄武巖覆蓋，構成了傾角在10～15度間的平坦山頂面。而在金頂的東側為古生代碳酸巖。
2、二峨山
二峨山又名綏山，呈東北—西南走向，由花崗巖、白云巖等構成。主峰形似覆釜，海拔1909米。林木多柳杉、雜木、竹類，建有林場。土產茶葉、竹筍、桐油、生漆等，并產中藥材。西麓豬肝洞，為道教名勝。南有紫蕓洞，相傳是唐呂純陽修煉處。
3、三峨山
三峨山又名西皇山，位于樂山沙灣鎮西南。長13千米，寬7千米，主峰海拔2027.1米，高出沙灣鎮江面1625米。出露地層有震旦系、寒武系、奧陶系和二疊系，山頂覆蓋玄武巖。東坡陡。開始形成于新第三紀末。有銅、鋁等礦產。
4、四峨山
四峨山在四川省大峨眉山之北二十里，峨眉山市區北五公里，海拔982米。因山形棱瓣如花，故又名花山，或謂即《水經注》之武陽龍尾山。山有圓通寺，山巔則有最早修建的古剎觀音庵，為明代高僧印宗禪師（四川綿州人）談禪結茅之處。

峨眉山金頂名字來源：金頂最早的建筑傳為東漢時的普光殿，唐、宋時改為光相寺，明洪武時寶曇和尚重修，為鐵瓦殿。錫瓦、銅瓦兩殿為明時別傳和尚創建。金頂金殿為明萬歷年間妙峰禪師創建的銅殿，萬歷皇帝朱翊鈞題名“永明華藏寺” 。
金頂的得名，即來源于“金殿” 。據有關資料記載，金殿高二丈四尺五寸，廣一丈三尺五寸，深一丈三尺五寸，瓦柱門窗四壁全為摻金的青銅鑄造，中供普賢菩薩像，旁列萬尊小佛，門壁上雕刻全蜀山川道路圖，工藝精湛，嘆為觀止。

The mountains west of it are known as Daxiangling. A large surrounding area of countryside is geologically known as the Permian Emeishan Large Igneous Province, a large igneous province generated by the Emeishan Traps volcanic eruptions during the Permian Period. At 3,099 metres (10,167 ft), Mt. Emei is the highest of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains of China.[2]
Administratively, Mt. Emei is located near the county-level city of the same name (Emeishan City), which is in turn part of the prefecture-level city of Leshan. It was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
