許多人堅持泰戈爾對這首詩的所有權，依據是《讀者》雜志2003年第14期上的引詩，署名是泰戈爾，摘自同年第5期《女子文學》（現改名《女子文摘》）。但據《女子文摘》一位編輯透露，這首詩是從網上弄來的。
一些研究印度文學和泰戈爾的學者表示，沒有見過這首詩。
香港女作家張小嫻“認下”首創權。在一個網頁上，這首詩的署名為香港知名女作家張小嫻。筆者是在網上對她的小說《荷包里的單人床》所附的讀者評論中發現線索的。原文是：“‘世界上最遙遠的距離，不是生與死的距離，不是天各一方，而是，我就站在你面前，你卻不知道我愛你’ 。讀到這段話，我就從此愛上了張小嫻的小說” 。
《荷包里的單人床》在2000年版中，張小嫻專門就這個文壇公案作了澄清。序中說，小說完成于1997年5月，講的是一個暗戀的故事，封面那段話是借書中主人公蘇盈之口說的。
張小嫻在序中稱：別人都以為我是抄泰戈爾的，只有我和我的出版社知道我沒有抄，這真是世界上最遙遠的距離。
